CAN A CHATBOT INTRODUCE NEW USERS TO THE WORLD OF PODCASTS?

PROJECT SUMMARY

Why do some people say podcasts aren’t for them? Most people discover new podcasts from other podcasts. Do podcasts have a discoverability problem? I created a Google Assistant chatbot to make friendly recommendations and introduce podcast listening to people who aren't listeners yet.

WHAT I DID

  • User Research
  • UX Writing
  • Trained chatbot in utterance, intent, and entity

TIMELINE

4 weeks start to finish including learning how to integrate the API and training the chatbot in Google’s system.

INTERESTING FACT

People self-reported that they mostly use assistants to play music, ask about the weather, get driving directions, or ask for simple facts like a celebrity’s birthday.

MIRROR REAL CONVERSATIONS — BUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS FOR THE CHATBOT

WHAT I DID

I started this project to learn how to create a Conversational UI for a chatbot or voice assistant. My first step was to explore the situations where people already use chatbots and find an area for improvement.

I collected 120 responses in a screener survey with three open-ended questions. Playing music and asking about the weather were the most popular use-cases.

The idea of a podcast chatbot came from my own personal frustration looking for recommendations outside of the ecosystem of podcasts I already listen to. I believed it was likely that people who play music would be comfortable taking the leap to play podcasts.
I took inspiration from reading conversations where people were already talking about podcasts. How do people ask for a recommendation in a Facebook group? What about on Reddit? How do people usually answer those questions, and what does a helpful answer look like?
